Update: I failed to register for the N4/N5 test at SFSU. While this doesn’t have direct bearing on this question, it does mean I’ll have less practice.

@xander I don't think its a big loss. Both N5 and N4 are basic enough that realistically you still can't do anything real with them. I think if you just self study a bunch of words and basic grammar youll have basically reached that point.
